A man stood on a column for thirty-seven years. They built the largest church on earth around him.

Simeon the Stylite spent the last decades of his life on a pillar north-west of Aleppo, preaching twice a day to whoever walked up. After his death an emperor raised four basilicas around the column — and nothing larger stood in the Christian world until Hagia Sophia.
