A community lived here. The monastery buildings sit beside the church on a U-shaped plan, and they housed both the monks who served the shrine and the students who came for religious learning — the site was a school as well as a destination.
This is the part of the complex that explains how the place ran. Tens of thousands of pilgrims do not administer themselves. Someone kept the liturgy, someone kept the buildings, someone fed and housed the arrivals, someone taught. The monastery is where all of that was organised from, and its scale is a direct measure of how busy the hill was.
By 638 the community had passed into Miaphysite hands. The later history of occupation, and what survives of the individual ranges, are to be confirmed.
